I really liked learning about Twitter especially because once I did the whole twitter mania started. Also, some of the Travel 2.0 and Music 2.0 I found to be very interesting and helpful. I especially liked all the Travel sites that I found on Travel 2.0 and really wished I was going some where so that I could look up information about it. Also, I really liked all the free courses that you can do on WebJunction. Also, the Digital Storytelling was a lot of fun and I think would make a great computer class because so many people are into scrapbooking. In all, I learned a lot and for some of the things I will want to reference back to especially the Economy thing. I really like the idea of WebOS; being able to access your information from any computer would be wonderful. Then I can stop transforming items via USB stick from one computer to another. I found Glide to be an interesting service; mainly because you can add more than one computer to the service. I also looked into Data backups which I find interesting. I have an external hard drive which I back up to and I remember during the flood thinking maybe I need to put this up higher in our house. Thankfully the water didn't get as high and my external hard drive was fine. However, I can understand the need for data backup onto the Internet. The only problem I could see is security and how reliable is the program. In all cloud computing is really is an important tool and one I think we will use more of in the coming years.

Thing 44: The Economy

The More things I do the more I realize that I really like the Common Craft Show videos found on each thing. There was a lot to look at and use. I really like MyMoney.gov which I will have to take a look at later. I thought the Banking 2.0 sites were interesting and the only problem that I can see with them is how secure they are. I found Feed the Pig to be interesting/creepy (that pig is scary) with a lot of helpful hints. The Site on raising your own chickens was interesting and it did raise and good debate on the merits and the fun of chickens. I really like being able to watch shows online because it really frees up your schedule and you don't feel tied to the TV. I also like how on Hulu the commercials change because watching the same commercial over and over gets really annoying. I feel that watching free videos helps shows because if you miss an episode you can watch it before the show comes on again. Also, I really like how the Office combines both TV and Internet. They have video clips and out takes that you can watch online plus the show on TV. So, in the best worlds both TV and Internet combine to create great entertainment.

Thing 42: Music 2.0

I really liked this thing and tried almost everything in it. I really like Pandora and found creating Stations to be a lot of fun. There was a few times when Pandora did not now an artist or song that I wanted to add. Also, I wish you could input albums as well as artist just because I love soundtracks. I found some new music to listen to and it was really fun to input a favorite artist and realize that you know all the following songs as well. I did liked that you could search other people's shared stations. I also liked how you can email a station that you made to someone else. I also tried listing to some other radio stations through Reciva.com. I feel that internet radio and Pandora are great programs for music lovers because if you are interested in a certain genre you can listen to a few artists to see who you like. And if you are like me; a person who like Japanese Anime songs; you can find stations to listen to on internet raido and through Pandora when there isn't a station in my area to listen to.

Thing 41: Mashup Your Life

I tried Lifestream.fm and Friendfeed and both were interesting sites but I don't really know when I will ever use these features. Also, it seems to just add to the several social networking sites I use. However, some of the other sites seem to put everything together into one site which may add time in that you only have to go to one site to view all your social networks that you belong to. However, there are many features that are unique to facebook and twitter that I think in some ways you loose out in how these originally sites are set up. So, in some way these services make your life easier but in the end I don't think I will use any of them. I think Mashups a really fun to play around with but I don't know how I would use it in everyday life. I think that there is a lot of great possibility within Mashups and if I new how to create one I think it could be great for a website. I looked at the website Dapper which seemed really interesting and useful. I like the idea of making mashup to help our patrons. I tried some of the Mashups and some worked and others didn't. I did make a few Phreetings; the links are shown below. In all I find Mashups to be an interesting aspect and I wish I new how to intergrate it within our library.
http://phreetings.com/q6d1pl46

Thing 39: Digital Storytelling

I tried both Scrapblog and Smilebox. I liked both programs but found Smilebox easier to use and less complicated. Smilebox, I feel, is used by the layman Scrapbooker. What I mean by this is that it was really easy to manipulate the pictures and though you could change how many pictures you want in each frame; you couldn't change much else like changing the layout of the pictures or how the background looks. Within Scrapblog though you could change anything in the layout. If there was a background picture you didn't like you could erase it. You can change the location and size of any picture or even add pictures or clip art. Also, if you didn't like the background you could change it. These is just so much more to manipulate or change with Scrapblog. I think this would be a fun to use. What I liked about Scrapblog is there was no downloads and it saves your finished blogs. So, you can retrieve information from any computer. Also, in Scrapblog you can input pictures easily from Facebook or Flickr while in Smilebox they only have you upload pictures from your computer. I feel people would really like using these programs and we would have a lot of turn out if we taught a computer class on them. I don't know if I would use this program myself but in all it was really fun and easy to use.

Make a Smilebox scrapbook

Thing 38: Screencasting

Screencasting is a really helpful tool to use; especially for computer classes and websites. Hopefully sometime this year.

Kyoto Photo Video

This is in relation to Thing 37

Thing 36: Comic Relief: Generate Some Fun

I tried the password generator but I have a problem with generated passwords because I can never remember them. I feel that online reading
is like all things; good in moderation. I feel the article
made some valid points about online reading and the problems it may cause.
I especially liked their discussion on fanfiction.net and how reading it by
itself (though fun) will not help your child gain all the reading skills they need
but doing a variety of reading will be must more helpful.
I also tried Twitterlit which serviced me the literary teaser of "Ok, I lied."
which I don't know what book it came from (I have labeled the answer to this
question). Ultimately, the questions we are getting asked have changed. People seem to want to find their own answers to questions and answer sites allow them to do that. I also feel like it gives people a feeling of safety especially if they feel embarrassed about the question they are asking. Sometimes I even use Answers Sites to answer patrons questions. The only real problem I have with these site is a validity of the answers. Now for some questions the answer is fairly simple and I feel like I can trust people's answers. However, sometimes you get strange answers to questions and that I really think is the problem with Answer Sites. Also, I took a look at the Slam the Boards Wiki and some of the questions that where asks seemed silly.

<link rel='related' href='http://www.rusq.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/47n2/PDFs/president.pdf' title='Thing 34: Is this Our Competition? I hope to make one of popular destinations in my town because I am terrible at directions and being able to has a resource that would create quick directions would be interesting. Also, I know on our event page for our library we have local links or websites to look at but to also have a Google map of the important buildings in our area like city hall or the DMV that people may need to use but don't know where they are especially if they are new in town. I did look at some of the mashups that where created and thought several of them were very helpful. Like one showed all the subways stops in London so that if you were traveling to there you could figure out who to get to your destination using the subway. So, I feel that Google maps is a really great feature for people who travel or people who are new to an area.

Thing 31: More Twitter

I tried posting my favorite music onto Twitter which took some time but I finally got it figured out. In all I find Twitter could be a really helpful and fun social networking tool for libraries especially if the tweets are interesting as well as informative. I don't have too many feeds left because if there were any that I was any feed I was really backed up on; I just dropped so I feel like filtering tools can be a great help especially if you are interested in reading blogs but only want to read the postings that interest you. I also looked at Traffic RSS feeds and added on from Denver with is where I am moving to. So, that will be fun to use when I live there. Finally, I looked at Spreed which was a really fun way to gain the news but I don't think I will be using it on a regular basis. Though I would like to be a speed reader even though I don't think that will happen. So, finally, I feel there is a lot out there to read and listen to; but only do as much as your able. It was really easy to create an alert and after receiving several updates via email I found that using the Comprehensive search type is difficult when you have a basic topic; so dependent on your search topic you may need to play around with what search type you use. Having your own personalized Home Page can be a fun thing. The main problem I have with customized Home Pages is that they alway seem to take forever to load so if I want to do something on that page I usually have to wait for the page to load which can take a while. If I need to move to another website the loading customized Home Page can cause me to waste time while I watch it load. However, they are fun to look at. In all, they are interesting ideas and if I had better internet speed I may consider them but for right now I am just wasting time loading images and widgets I really don't need to view.

Thing 27: Twitter

I thought Twitter was interesting to look at. I really enjoyed working on the original 23 Things and hope the next 24 Things to be just as interesting. Also, it has really been fun thinking up ways in which to use all that I have learned. From teaching computers classes on Flickr to working with my colleagues in order to create a PB Wiki site from Teen Read Week. So, I really hope to learn a lot and implement what I will learn. It was interesting to refresh my blog because I had not written a new post since 23 Things ended. I did lose all my added elements when I changed my Template and I am still trying to remember how to get them back. So, I hope you like the changes and will tune in for the rest of the More Things on a Stick/24 Things.

Flickr

This is a test post from , a fancy photo sharing thing.

Thing 23: End

I found 23 Things to be a lot of fun. There were many things that I learned and a lot that I learned more about. The greatest thing that I learned was about RSS; what it is and how to use it. Also, I really liked being able to look and talk to other librarians and my colleagues about 23 Things. It was fun to read their blog and it was great to be able to vent my frustration to then when something didn't work. Like Thing 9 which wasn't easy as the title said "These Web 2.0 tools make it easy to collaborate on documents and presentations without the hassles of email attachments." There was more hassles using these tools then email; so that step really didn't showcase these tools in a good light. In all I found 23 Things to be a great program and I am very happy that I did it. It was really interesting to learn about different Library 2.0 things. This program really gives a good overview of different programs that patrons might find helpful and give a good overview of how these programs work.

Thing 22: Continuing to Blog

I have learned a lot with 23 Things and many aspects I will continue to use throughout my day to day life. Like Google Reader which has me linked to my local paper, fun blogs, interesting librarian blogs, and other news related information. I may continue my Nic23 blog however, I feel like I will start to blog more on Facebook and MySpace instead now that I feel more comfortable with it. I will also be using Flickr more and try to store all my pictures on my page. So, in conclusion there is a lot that I am taking away from 23 Things and a lot that I will continue to use.

Thing 21: Social Networks

Thing 21 was interesting and I took a quick look at Gather, WebJunction, and Ning. Then I joined 23 Things on a Stick Ning were I was able to costumize my own page. I added a Ning badge to my blog and I took part in a discussion about 23 Things. Finally, I added a Ning Widget Video Player to show one of the music video's I uploaded to my Ning. It is really hard to see the video though with my background so I added it to this post also. The Music Video was made by DuckMilk productions and contains a combination of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire's movies set to the song "Do You Love Me" by the Contours. The music video is really well made and very funny. I found these other social networks to be interesting and I liked how you could add a badge or widget to my blog so that other people can find and experience my Ning page.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v14.nonxt7.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D0f1d5a311369d064%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331751713%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D234CFF78E0596295968F04109F527CE6A7DAE50A.69FAC0A68268715287A9BDDD0E658164699F9C6D%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Df1d5a311369d064%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DL1_3cMmUX1t1MOSqJk3FrcL4WJE&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Thing 20: MySpace and Facebook

I found thing 20 to be really easy mainly because I already have a MySpace and Facebook account. I first created a MySpace page just for the fun of it one day but I don't really use it that much. In fact, I don't really know of anyone that is on MySpace and sad as it is I don’t have any friends. I then created a Facebook account; mainly because my friend forced me to and again I didn't use it that much until recently. Facebook is a great way to keep in track with friends; by seeing what they are doing and reading their wall. MySpace I think is the better social network for a library to use because it has become really popular with teenagers and that is all I see them using in the library. Also, it is really easy to showcase pictures, books, music, and etc then on Facebook. Finally, I find MySpace less confusing to maneuver then Facebook. So, MySpace is the social network I would choose for a library to use; but for individual use I find Facebook to be the better social network.

Thing 19: Podcast

I looked at several different podcasting web sites. The one I chose to use was podcast.com; mainly because it was easy to use and easy to set up the RSS feed. I did look at local podcasting web sites; however most of the podcasts you had to listen to right there while the RSS feed really gives you more options. The first podcast I listened a little to was called Amateur Traveler Podcast: Travel for the love of it. I listened to the newest podcast which was about Walt Disney World. It was an interesting podcast but it lasted about 30 minutes long so I didn't listen to the whole thing. The next and final podcast I listened to was The Library Channel which was from a College Library in Arizona. It was about their Helpdesk and IT people and I didn't listen to a lot of it because again it was about 30 minutes long. I looked at some other library podcasts and most of them were about the events or activities that were happening in their library. In all, there is a lot of podcasts out there to listen to and no wonder if it is as easy as using G Cast were you use the phone to record our podcast then can mix in music then finally publish your very own podcast. So, virtually any library could create there own podcast. I just don't know if anyone would listen to it because as interesting as they are I don't find them interesting enough to waste 30 minutes of my time on them.

Thing 18: YouTube

When deciding what to post from YouTube I decided to add the video that first got me interested in YouTube; which is a remake of the trailer for American Psycho. The only problem is that I had to go through the ELM Portal. I looked at several of ELM items. I looked at InfoTrac which didn't have many instructions and was therefore very confusing. Many people made comments about this thing so I will not go into more detail. So, after a time I was able to add my search as a RSS feed onto my Google Reader. So, if I was doing research for a paper this would be a nice way to draw out the research and help me find up to date information. So, for students this could be a very helpful tool; however I was only about to access this through to ELM Portal and not through are own link to InfoTrac so I don't know how easily student will be able to access this within our library. The other thing I will talk about is my web page I made within EBSCO. I made it on April 1 so there is a little April Fools going on within my web page. I really didn't know what the point of making the web page was unless other people can look at your web page; however in reality it is not a viable source within a paper.

Thing 16: Students

Through many of the 23 Things I have felt that if I had had these tools when I was going to school it would have been a major help and it is no exception with this thing. I looked at both Research Project Calculator (RPC) and Assignment Calculator and found that I like assignment Calculator quite a lot. What I like about Assignment Calculator is that when I enter a fake paper project they gave me 12 steps that I had to do in the upcoming weeks. It also gave helpful links to different sites like the library and etc... What I really liked about it was that it emails you reminders which are the same for RPC. RPC gave only 6 steps when I entered the same fake paper assignment. There were less research steps then in Assignment Calculator, but otherwise they were basically the same. However, within RPC there is a link to the Teachers Guide. In this section there are helpful worksheets that a teacher can give to a student about finds their thesis statement or even what a thesis statement is. These are interesting papers and I even think some of my teachers in college used some of these worksheets. What I like about RPC and Assignment Calculator is that they both help student manage their time so that they are not scrambling to finish a paper. This could be a very handy resource not only for academic libraries but for public libraries as well. As, we do get high school students coming in for research and this could be a handy tool we can steer them towards.

Thing 15: Games

I really thing that gaming have become an interesting and annoying fact of libraries. Interesting because many libraries now offer game night which we also offer were kids can play Guitar Hero and DDR. What is annoying about games in the library is all the kids that use our computers to play MMOPRG's like Runescape. So, gaming has become apart of the library and if you want to read a really interesting blog one librarian writes http://themonkeyspeaks.wordpress.com who did a blog on gaming in the library and its positive and negative effects. The link is hocked onto my title so just click on Thing 15: Games to get the blog. Also, reading the article "Reality Bytes: Eight Myths about Video Games Debunked" which talked about how video games are not for little kids any more and many of the game that are coming out are rated M. Finally I did look at Puzzle Pirates and Second Life. I tried to do puzzle Pirates Pirates but I would first have to download the program onto my computer which would take about 30 minutes and I didn't want to wait so I moved onto Second Life. Second Life I found to be interesting. The video was interesting as the man roller bladed on sand and flew in the sky going throughout the town and confusion the hell out of me. I couldn't really see the signs that he was looking at. Also, looked at some more information about Second Life however, if these two games require a download they are both games that patrons cannot play because all our downloads are erased at night on our public computers so looking at Runescape or other games that don't require a download for play.

Thing 14: LibraryThing

I really liked LibraryThing and in fact some other members of our staff had already linked their library to their blog and it looked so cool I wanted my own so I had already created an account with LibraryThing which is really easy to do they only ask for a user name and a password. It was also really easy to upload my books onto LibraryThing. The hardest part about it was trying to remember all the books that I love and trying to find really great covers that I would want shown on my blog. You cannot image the really ugly covers they had for Lord of the Rings books. After I added some books I decided to link my LibraryThing onto my blog which was really easy to do. It was similar to adding an avatar I just had to go into the layout and add an HTML/ Java Script page element. I did this also for a LibraryThing Widget which I put under my random list of books so that people can search my LibraryThing. The only bad part about this is that I don't have that many books uploaded only 27. In all I really liked LibraryThing and the only thing I wished is that I could have to separate categories within my LibraryThing; one for books that I have read and loved and another for books that I want to read. So, LibraryThing is a really helpful tool and can be one that people would like libraries to link to showing different books in our collection especially if they can be linked to our card catalog.

Thing 13: Productivity

I found that thing 13 to be very interesting and something that I would like to discover when I have more time especially some of the related articles like the 2007 Guide to free software and webapps which had some really interesting items like utorrent which allows me to download BitTorrents which are usually web shows like Torchwood which we don't get in the US. However, though I like some of the productivity tools some of then I think would in actually waste more time then they would save. An example of this is costuming you Google or Yahoo home page. I did this at home with my Google Home page and I am really sorry that I did because now it takes twice as long to upload that page for information I really don't look at especially when I just want to move onto another website.
I have used Google Calendar extensively because at our library we offer meeting rooms to the public and I put all that information into a Google calendar. What I like about Google calendar is that it is easy to work with and easy to understand especially for people who don't work with it as extensively as I do. What I mean is that other staff members can use this calendar to find out if rooms are available fairly easy. What I also like is that you can add more then one calendar and then have them all be different colors; which is what I did for each meeting room. Also, we have several meeting that occur monthly and this is a really great feature because it saves me a lot of time that I would originally have to use imputing information. On the same line there is also the duplicate option which allows me to create multiple entries for the same group at different time very easily. So, if you cannot tell I love Google Calendars which has made my life and I want to think staffs life a little bit easier. So, calenders are a really helpful tool even if you don't have meeting room it is great for keeping track of library events.
I also looked at the Ta-Da Lists which first I needed to create an account and then I could create several lists which I did find interesting because you can check off items and within your list it will show up as another list of done items. The Main page shows each list and the amount of items you still have to complete. The final thing I looked at was Backpack and Stikkit which I took tours of. I found both to be interesting and similar. As, both include lists, notes, documents, pictures, tages, calendars, and much more. I found them especially good for sharing information like a Wiki but better formatted and when your library is a large region this could be a good thing.

Thing 12: Media

Social Media Sites are something I have seen but didn't realize what they were. I had already been on Digg watching videos that people have submitted to the 9, which is a web show created by Yahoo and hosted by Maria Sansone. If you have never seen it check it out, it sometimes has some really good websites. Back to social media sites, as I said before I have already experienced Digg which unfortunately you have to sign up in order to digg something. I did look at the other three media sites and found that in all of them you need to sign up to rate and submit news articles, pictures, and videos. However, the rating system for some of them were very interesting; you either vote up or down which brings the total higher or lower giving almost an average total. You can also add comments to the stories and etc that you look at. I liked the outline of all these sites besides Reddit because it was just straight lists with no pictures. Finally, I tried to join Digg to add an article to it however digg didn't want me to join because every time I would press Join Digg it would just bring me back to its home page. :( So I decided to join Mixx instead. It was really easy to sign onto Mixx they just asked your email address and a password. Once I had signed in I went to the BBC website and I firstly tried to submit a story about China but it had already been submitted. So I found a better story about Bruno the bear, a wild bear which touched the hearts of Germans for weeks in 2006 is stuffed and put on public display. The article is short but interesting, I tried to add a link to the title; just click on Thing 12: Media so that you can look at the article. This took me a long time to figure out how to add a link and were it is but I finally figured it out. Lastly, I think that Social Media Sites are a great idea as we have so many news junkies that come into our library; however the only problem is we don't have enough computers for all the people who would like to use these sites.

Thing 11: Tag and Del.icio.us

Thing 11 was interesting but I don't know how much I will use Del.icio.us. For Tags I have already been entering tag in all my 23 Things and will continue to do so. Also I have used tags before and even on other site with 23 things like Flickr I have added tags. Regarding Del.icio.us it was really easy to set up and install. However, I don't know really when I would use it. Majority of my favorite websites I have already saved to my favorite list and most of them are fanfic sites which unless I have a lot of time on my hands the only time I have in which to read is when I am on my own personal computer. Also, anything else is just basic websites like msn for email or Youtube. I do think that Del.icio.us is great for students especially if they are doing research which is mentioned in Thing 10. While on your own Del.icio.us page it is interesting to look at what other people have said about the websites I had tagged and the amount of people that have tagged them also. In all I find Del.icio.us to be interesting however it is not reasonable for regular reference use because you first have to load your Del.icio.us page then find the certain tag that you need while bookmarks on Mozilla Firefox are more handy and faster so that the patron doesn't have to wait as long for their information.

Thing 10: Wikis

Wikis, I have heard the word before but I really didn't know what it meant until thing 10. Of course I have used Wikipedia extensively and sometime more extensively then my profs probably liked and as Librarian Associate I do use it to answer a patron more basic questions. I looked at a few of the Wikis that were listed and fore the Library Wiki sites I found it very interesting as most allowed patrons to add information like reviews about different books but there was also a link to the catalog record so that a person could see right away if the book was in or not. What I especially liked about the Book Lovers Wiki which is from the Princeton Public Library is that you could not only write a review and it was linked to their catalog but that there were links to outside websites. So, I found out that library Wikis can be really helpful and cool. Yes, I said cool and I really think that our library would benefit form having our own Wiki.

I added a new page to the 23 Things on a Stick Wiki. My page asks the question: What are GREAT about 23 things? And if you want the answer you need to find my page which I have a link to it on the home page. Creating a new page was easy figuring out how to link my new page onto the home page was harder and trying to format that link was the hardest think about thing 10. What I learned from adding to the 23 Wiki is that formatting a Wiki page is important. I feel that one person or a group needs to be in charge on how a page is formatted because the 23 Things Wiki is very confusing to look at there is a lot of different information on the web page and some of it is related and some of it is not. There are links to other pages but they are not all in one spot. So, a Wiki can be a great thing with people adding their own input however there need to be a clear concision on how information is grouped and the page formatted.

Thing 9: Collaboration

I think that Zoho writer and Google Docs are interesting and if a person is collaborating with another on a document I think these are really good tools to have. Unfortunately I was only able to use Google Docs to look at the public document but I did make an account with Zoho writer so that I could see how it is set up. Of the two I found Zoho writer to be more professional looking and in some cases easier to use. However, both do have some of the similar activities. Like for both a person can edit a document and look at revisions. What I like about Google Docs is that it is easy to use because I am already familiar with its layout. It has a similar to Google Calendar and the Google Reader which I have extensively used. Also, when you look at revisions you can compare changes that have happened like it will show you what was added and what was erased. Also, you were able to create not just a document but a spreadsheet and a presentation as well. What I didn't like about Goggle Docs is that after every few minutes it would have to load and if you were just reading the document you would then have to find your spot all over again and this became very annoying. However, this could also be a problem that Zoho writer has as I was never able to look at the public document with Zoho writer I was only able to look at a document that I had created myself and no one else was contributing to. Finally, I didn't like how comments were shown in Google Docs because the only way to distinguish what was a comment and what was the actually document was a dotted box that went around the comments. This makes the document look sloppy and hard to read but if you read it in preview you can actually see the printed document.

Zoho writer is easier because everything that you can do is on one page you don't have to switch from edit into insert in order to insert a comment like Google Docs is laid out. Also, in Zoho writer a person can revert a document to an earlier version or just look at earlier versions and what changes were made. Also, when a person adds comments a comment sign is added and to actually read the comments one has to click on the bubble. I like this because it leaves the document relativity whole. Also, a person can work on more that one document at a time which is harder to do on Google Docs. Finally, Zoho writer doesn't have spreadsheets or presentation but it does have different templates like a resume, speech outline, movie ticket, meeting schedule, etc...

So, in conclusion dependent on your needs Google Docs and Zoho writer are both a great way to collaborate on projects. I can see these collaborative programs being useful in the library especially is a person is creating a policy and what's input from librarian throughout their region they could ask them just to add comments about different aspects of the policy and in Zoho writer a person is able to look at just the comments that people leave as apposed to clicking on each on in the document. So, in many different ways if your library includes many branches this is a way in which all people can collaborate to make their library system better.

Thing 8.2: Share

Thing 8 was actually rather fun. I choose to use Picture Trail in order to organize your pictures into what is called Flicks. At first I thought you had to upload pictures right away from your desktop in order to use the slide show, but when I went to use the slide show I found that you could upload your pictures from Myspace or Flickr. However, I wasn't able to get in connect with Myspace were all my pictures were located so I was happy I had downloaded some onto the desktop which I had uploaded onto Picture Trail. The pictures that I choose to use were the one that I took when I went to Berlin, Germany. The trip was a lot of fun and I hope you have fun watching my slide show. I also briefly looked at some of the other sharing activities like Thumbstacks and Zoho where you can make your own slide show which with the versatility of then having this slide show be accessible for all computers would have really helped when I was in school and making power point presentations and hoping that where I had saved it would then upload onto this new computer. It was all very stressful. Also, these slide show creators can be useful for when a person is teaching a class especially if it is a web conference. So, these programs that share are interesting but time consuming.

Thing 8.1: Germany

<embed src="http://flash.picturetrail.com/pflicks/3/spflick.swf" quality="high" flashvars="ql=2&src1=http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL433/10810315/flicks/1/4188542&src2=http://widgetize.picturetrail.com/flicks/4188542" wmode="transparent" bgcolor="#000000" name="revolution" allowscriptaccess="sameDomain" style="height: 350px;

Thing 7 was a lot of information but luckily most of it I already new. The first web 2.0 tool that we went over is email which is something that I am very familiar with and use on a daily basis. I have learned a lot while working in the library with both staff and patrons being my teachers. Also, I have taught email classes to our patrons both beginning email which basically goes over setting up an email account with yahoo and more advanced email which deals with attachment and managing emails. The hardest class I ever taught is basic email because if patrons have had no experience with email it is almost like I am talking another language when I try to explain it to them. However, once they have gotten the hang of it is a lot of fun teaching them the more advanced techniques.

I have also used IM, especially since it seems to be the only way in which to get a hold with my brother. However, in regards to use within the library it is not feasible at this time just because staff doesn't have the ability to download information onto our desktop, only our IT people can do it, but first it would probably have to be approved and a policy written up. However, if the library ever got IM I think it would be a great addition. As Aaron Schmidt and Michael Stephens talk about in the article "IM Me" IM could be used to bring library staff together from across a distance. In the library I work for we are apart of a regional system with Moorhead acting as the hub so a lot of our small libraries call us or email us with questions which they then could IM instead. The only problem would be that staff may no be readily available to answers their questions.

Text Messaging is something that I can truthfully say I have never done and really I don't feel any need to use text messaging. However, I do feel like I am out of touch with people who do use text chat lingo. In fact, if anyone has seen the AT&T commercial where the son, daughter, and grandmother are specking in text slang; I feel that if there weren’t subtitles I would only understand half of what they are saying or texting. Also, the fact that the grandmother can use text lingo makes me feel really inadequate. However, then I just think of my real grandmother and the fact that she cannot text makes me feel better. The one advantage I find to texting is stated in the article "SMS offers libraries new talk tool" by Marshal Breeding; libraries have started using texting to send notices that requested items are in which could be very useful in the future, unfortunately until all our patrons catch up to this texting craze it isn't even a possibility.

Finally the last item to go over is Web Conferencing which was interesting to explore but in a way hard to do. First, I tried viewing a web conference through OPAL, however the site wanted me to download something in order for me to be apart of the Conference and as I was working on a staff computer I didn't have the authority to do that. I then tried Minitex where I didn't find any open sessions however they did have many archived ones and I glimpsed at one about podcasting. The archived web conference was basically made up of slides with audio and though a little dry; it was interesting never the less.

So, finally in conclusion I find web 2.0 tools to be very useful and the way of the future but we still have a long way to go before we implement all the tools listed in this Thing. Also, sorry for writing so most I didn't know I had so much to say about Web 2.0 Tools.

Thing 6: Image Generators

I found the Image Generators that we had to use for thing 6 to be really interesting and I did try a variety of items. The first thing that I did was to create a Trading Card with Big Hugh Labs which actually had a lot of image generators that you could choose from. The hardest part about the Trading Card was finding an actually picture that I had of my self and the only ones that I had on my PC were the pictures that I took while I was in Kyoto, Japan. In the picture I am standing in front of the entrance of the Kiyomizu Temple which is considered on the new Seven Wonders of the World which is had to see from this picture but I used another picture of me when I am next to the temple to use one the frames that Big Hugh Labs offers. In that picture I used a postcard frame and at first I was going to show the postmark but unfortunately it covered my head so it looked a little strange. Finally I went to Image Chief and created a Flower Text which will always be shown at the bottom of my blog and with flash animation it slowly reviles You R a Star. In all these Image Generators is a lot of fun once you have some pictures and know what you are doing. However, you can also spend a lot of time creating these images so it is also easy to go overboard with the image generators.

Thing 5: Flicker Fun

I used spell with flicker to write out my name using pictures from flicker. However, my name didn't turn out as great as I wanted it. Oh Well.

Thing 4: Flickr

This is a photo that I found while looking through the Library of Congress' photos. The photo is called At the Vermont State Fair, <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Rutland and was shot by Jack Delano in Sept of 1914. The photo itself if interesting but what I would was so great about it was the "add a note" feature people have already used because lsmucker2002 added the note "Puzzled? which way to go..." to the girl with the scrunched up face. As of right now I don't know how to add notes but it seems to be a lot of fun and almost like a hidden message to gets added to your pictures. However, adding pictures and a link to one’s blog was quite a challenge and in all the hardest part of thing 4. It took me forever to realize that I first needed to download the picture to the desktop and then from there upload it to my blog. I did set up my own flickr account, which was relatively easy and painless; however, I still do not know if I would want my photos to be open to the public or only private. Adding photos was easy and in all very fun.

Thing 3: RSS

Of all the things, that I have learned, and just let me remind you I am on thing 3 and so far all the things beside thing 2 have been really interesting; however RSS feeds has been the most interesting and exciting Thing so far. I feel like I have finally learned something that I can implement throughout my life. The hardest part being finding all the RSS feeds I want to add and realizing that there has to be a limit to how much I can or should want to add, because really I can only read so much a day. However, besides all that I found setting up an aggregator to be relatively easy. I set up an aggregator through Google Reader, which I was happy that I did, as I was already familiar with how Google is set up. Meaning that I have used Google calendar extensively and because my blog is also through Google I thought in the end that it would be easier having all these items in the same location so to speak.

 <u1:p></u1:p>

<u2:p></u2:p>What I love about Google Reader, which is really strong words for a program that I only learned about yesterday, is that right away it asked showed me different bundles of RSS feeds that I could belong to. For example, they have the bundle called FUN, which included You Tube Most Viewed, Quotes of the Day, The Onion, and three others. And even thought I deleted the rest of what was in that bundle including You Tube because all the main videos were of a guy being slashed by another skater during a hockey game and if that is the kind of videos You Tube viewers like then I don't think I want to know what they like every day. However, I am getting off topic Google also had different bundles like News and Sports, which again I did not subscribe to but liked that I had the chance to. Also, the next RSS feed it tried to get me to subscribe to was The Form which I thought was really cool and then I wondered how they knew I wanted to subscribe to The Form; oh well. Adding different blogs was made easy and finally making my Google Reader all neat and organized by putting them into subfolders made me realize that Google Reader Rocks and that I need to find a lot more RSS feeds.

Thing 2: Library 2.0

I really had no idea what Library 2.0 (L2) was and in fact, I had not ever heard of the term before. However, I think John Blyberg makes an interesting statement in his blog when he stated that L2 is happening right now. I agree with his statement that L2 is a movement that is happening right now and I feel it is one our patrons are helping to push forward. What I mean is that I have been asked so many questions about how to use the computer that it has really solidified what I know and what I do not know. However, whenever I was asked a question I did not know I always tried to find out the answer whither it was by asking staff or other patrons. Therefore, I really think 23 things will help prepare me to answers a completely new set of questions patrons will ask. In addition, this program will be almost like a stepping-stone to understanding a whole new group of patrons because sometimes I have no idea what some of our younger patrons are talking about when they have computer questions. I am excited to learn these common computer items.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Thing 1: Blog

In all I found creating a blog to be relatively easy; however there was some problems with creating an avatar just because the latest Flash player has not been uploaded. However, besides that creating my blog just reminded me of creating a My Space page or creating a face book page. In all the hardest part was thinking up a name. I also really liked creating an avatar, I felt like I was creating my own Sim. However, I found uploading my avatar onto my blog by the instruction that was giving to be hard. Instead, I just saved my avatar to the desktop and then uploaded it from there onto my blog. This is a tip I got from another librarian.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
